Hi, I am a third grade teacher with 28 students. I teach my students all subjects. I would like my students to document their year in third grade. A great way to do this is by creating a newspaper both on-line and in print. In CA there are many standards that students must reach each year. By creating a newspaper the students will be able to hit several of them in reading and writing. In addition it will give students something "real-life" to work on while helping them to improve reading, writing, decision-making and revision skills. It will improve vocabulary and language conventions. It will help students to better understand computer technology and what can be done with it. My students will need a digital camera and a multi-function printer/ scanner/ copier. The students will be doing everything but the photocopying for themselves. They will come up with story ideas, they will do interviews, they will write the stories. I will help them to edit the stories and do the layouts. The students will be able to take pictures when they do special projects and go on field trips. They will be able to print out those pictures and write articles on their experience. I would like my students to have this experience both so that they know how to use the computer and so that they learn all the work that goes into creating a newspaper. By the end of the year they will have the skills to use a computer, a digital camera and a printer/ copier/ scanner, in addition to having a collection of memories!
