Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I school that provides a safe positive learning environment to under privileged children. The majority of our parents in our classroom rely on public transportation, because they can't afford a vehicle. The majority also rely on government support to make ends meet including free lunches at school, and a bag of food that goes home on weekends to help feed the students and their siblings so they don't go hungry.
Our classroom is a Life Skills classroom.
Our students learn pre-requisite skills that will allow them to interact with their community. We do community based learning, self-help skills, transition skills, and social behavioral skills in addition to functional academic learning so the students can learn basic skills that might allow them to work or volunteer after public education ends.
This means we learn to go to the grocery store to build money management skills. We also take them out to eat to reinforce manners, socially acceptable behaviors, learn how to utilize a menu, stay in budget, and to pay for items. They also learn how to cross a street, be safe, toileting skills, and other essential life skills.
My Project
The items requested for this project are for needs in the classroom. The majority of our parents don't have the money to contribute to our classroom. We've been purchasing tissues and cleaning supply out of pocket, as well as pencils, pens, markers, crayons and paper.
Our students don't get to eat lunch (free and reduced) until 1:00.
That is a long time for students to have to wait, and they need a snack. Most of our parents are relying on government assistance, and can't send snacks to school for the kids. We also need positive re-inforcers (candy and toys) to help reinforce positive behaviors. An example: A student uses her communication card to indicate she is frustrated and needs a break instead of hitting. She would get a candy or toy to reinforce communicating without hitting as we teach that skill.
