This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a year-round, special education school, serving emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and other special education classified students. My students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds in New York City and throughout NY state. Over ninety-five percent of the student body is eligible for free lunch and more than ninety percent receive public assistance. They have exceptional abilities and with the proper accommodations and modifications, they truly thrive in our school setting. My students are afforded smaller classroom ratios, personalized attention, and a myriad of specially certified providers that assist in their overall development.

My Project

The most important item in this project is a pencil sharpener. I cannot express to you how essential an electric pencil sharpener is. We go through so many pencils everyday and they are constantly in need to be sharpened. I also ordered some dissection items for zoology, a few pollinator items for our spring gardening unit, and some general lab items. Our classroom is really not equipped to do science labs. The more projects I order the closer we get to turning this into a space for science not just a space for learning. Our goal is to be able to us the life cycle modeling kit to further our understanding of honey bees and integrate them into our school garden.

We are slowly but surely making our classroom into a science lab.
