This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach middle school students (sixth through eighth-graders) who qualify for special education in an inner-city, charter school in Youngstown, Ohio. This area is high poverty and most, if not all, of the students fall far below the poverty line. My school is a Title One school where all of the children receive free breakfast and lunch. They work so hard and have persevered through a difficult year of distance learning and are now beginning the school year back in the building! Everyone is so excited!
The students I work with love to learn and see themselves making progress!
My Project
My goal for this project, supported by my school's philosophy, is to focus on students' passions and interests, in order to support individual learning styles and needs. These choices will provide students with the opportunity to choose a seating option that works best for them. Students will be able to access content with one less barrier, by being comfortable with their seating choices. Additionally, I am requesting some basic supplies and snacks that can be available to the students as they need them.
Students styles vary greatly and it is important to me to support each student individually and as a collective, cohesive group.
This allows me to make a more equitable environment for my diverse group of learners.
Flexible seating gives students the ability to find ways to support their own learning. It provides students with choice and helps with focus. The wobble stools allow students to work at their tables or desks, with the option to move in their seats when they need to. The wiggle cushion allows students to move closer to the front of the classroom to be more engaged, or into a separate space, where they can focus on their work individually, or in small groups.
