My students need and want the twenty-six book series of A to Z Mysteries and would be even more thrilled if they received that series and five of the Cam Jansen books.
My third grade students are involved in the Move On When Reading Program initiated by the Arizona Department of Education which requires all students to reach a state determined benchmark in order to move on to fourth grade. Students will be tested in both reading and writing. It will be beneficial for all the students to have supplemental readers to read both in the classroom and available to checkout and read at home. Many of my students are from lower income families who cannot afford to purchase books.
My students love to read especially the three copies we have of A to Z Mysteries by Ron Roy.
Since our classroom only has three, random copies, the students wait anxiously for their turn to read one of them. They often ask to partner read when someone has one of the mysteries so they don't have to wait their turn!
My Project
The books that will be supplied by the fulfillment of this project will benefit all of the students in many ways, but especially in a very important one, they will have a series of chapter books that they love to read. and, in doing so, their reading skills will improve as they encounter new sentence structures, new words to define, new opportunities to discuss story structures, setting and characterization in an approachable and enjoyable way.
The more a student reads, the more they encounter life whether it is in a fictional or non-fictional format.
These chapter books present life about children to children. When reading, they have the opportunity to step out of their real world into a fictional world and for some who come from very dysfunctional families, it is time well spent.
Many of my students come from low income families who cannot afford to purchase more than life's necessities and sometimes, not even the necessities. Reading books at school is the only opportunity they have to read. Many are avid readers that spend every available minute in the classroom reading because they know there are no books at home. With an ample classroom supply, they will be able to do what they love!
