I am fortunate enough to get to work with English Learners who come from all over the world and who speak many different languages! This diverse group of students has come to the United States from Mexico, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Honduras. English Learners come up against many unique challenges, some that are very different than the ones their native-English speaking peers face. They have entered a new school, in a new country with different language, academic, and social-emotional needs. Despite hardships, they have learned a great deal during their first year in Indiana! They have worked to progress their English and Spanish development, learn academic content, and form relationships with peers and teachers.
More recently, they have learned the importance of serving others.
This group is eager to help and show love and kindness towards others. They jump at any opportunity they can find to help other students and faculty. They value the importance of inclusion and making sure everyone around them feels accepted, especially new students who are entering the country and school mid/late in the year. I am so excited to see what they make of their service-learning project!
My Project
This list contains some of the things I need to welcome my students to school. I hope to make my classroom feel inviting and inclusive while meeting the needs of all of my learners. Students will learn to identify and regulate their emotions while being engaged with building blocks. I will also be able to create resources and tools for students with the anchor chart paper that will be displayed around the classroom.
