This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students, from Tuscaloosa, AL are excited and love hands on activities and books on their reading level. I teach students with special needs and I am new to this school and need materials to build my classroom for success.
The items I selected will help me build the foundational skills my students need to be successful.
These items will allow me to have more successful small group and center activities with my students. My students have difficulties learning and retaining basic skills, so the more opportunities I have for the students to apply the knowledge, the better chance they have to retain the information.
My Project
If my project is fully granted I will be able to have more resources to enable my students with special needs to gain the foundational skills they need to master. This is my first year at this school and first time teaching K-2 so I need to build my supply of materials.
I selected several tactile alphabet and number (sandpaper, textured and feely fabric) materials to help the students retain letter naming fluency and to be able to write the letters and numbers successfully.
I also selected beginning readers to build on the alphabetic principles to begin reading.
Building my classroom materials will enable me to vary the activities to keep students interest and motivate them to learn.
