Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is in Jackson Heights, NY. The community is made up of diverse cultures. Many of our families are from struggling lower income. I will be teaching a special education bridge 1st and 2nd grade class. Several of my students have autism. Some have ADHD. One student has oppositional defiant disorder. I am desperately seeking to set up my classroom with accommodations which will help my students with their sensory needs and transitions. A little nook where they can find peace and solace and breathe and if only for a few minutes release the stress that they encounter with the day to day pressures of being in a regimented room. Since my school is a community school and not specifically a specialized one, funding is limited for my population. Your support will benefit my students so that they can have the tools that they need to get through their days.
My Project
My class is comprised of 12 students, all with different disabilities. The materials I am requesting are to help my students with coping mechanisms. My students can only be in a certain area for a limited amount of time. They require constant breaks with movement and exercise.
The materials in my project will allow me to set up my classroom and make it effective and give my students a break area to go to where they will be able to refocus and come back and join their other classmates.
The assistive tools are all means of stimulation and assistance with their sensory issues thus allowing them to progress. The play mat will provide support and protection from the hard floor in the "Chill Out Zone". The bean bag and pillows will allow students to relax and rest their bodies when they need a break.
