I teach in a public school on a military base in South Carolina. Our student body consists of military children, as well as children in low income families that have chosen to send their children to our school due to our status as a "Choice School" under NCLB. We are considered a "High Poverty" school due to the fact that the majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch.
Due to the nature of some military families, many parents are deployed throughout the year.
These children are left with one parent at homes, as well as the financial situation of many families having both parents working many hours. Several students' families are strained for not only money, but time. This affects the students academically. Our parents sacrifice so much for their children and for our country. I feel indebted to them and feel it is my duty to serve them to the best of my ability.
My Project
I feel it is my duty to provide an environment where students are comfortable and are able to learn. I offer a unique environment where students do not sit at traditional rows of desks, but sit on different types of comfortable seating including chairs, as well as yoga mats. This is done to give students the choice and ability to be more active throughout the school day without being confined in one position, sitting in a chair at a desk. Although I have found great success with this method and I have found that this environment is ideal for many, but it is not for all. For this reason, I would like to provide my students an additional option to sit at small tables located throughout my classroom. In having these tables, all of my students would be comfortable and be able to create an environment that is ideal for them to learn.

My students this year, next year, and for many years to come will truly benefit from having tables in my classroom. This is something that I personally cannot afford to do on my own and my school does not have the funding to provide.
