My Students

Our class is a 6th, 7th and 8th grade varying exceptionalaties special education classroom, the disabilities in our room include Autism, Down Syndrome and other intellectual disabilities. My 6-8th grade ESE (special needs) students are 90% poverty and free lunch.

Every one of my students are individuals with very unique personalities that make them special.

All of my students are very active and require modifications made to the classroom and curriculum to meet their individual needs. These students strive every day and overcome obstacles in order to excel in their academics.

My Project

The makerspaces will become an arena for informal, project-driven, self-directed learning, providing work space where I will incorporate STEM. The students will get to tinker, try out solutions, and hear input from students with similar interests.

Makerspaces allow students to take control of their own learning as they take ownership of projects they have not just designed, but defined.

Students will work with snap circuits to understand electricity and the way it works to power everyday objects. A 3Doodler, 3D pen will allow them the creativity to take an abstract thought and make a concrete representation.

Students who interact with makerspaces in learning can not only create custom physical objects, but can also make them interactive with digital tools and give them life. Students will use the create-o-flakes in conjunction with their coding robot Dash to write a code for Dash to follow and build accessories to complete task cards with the create-o-flakes. In effect, students’ creations interact with them, helping represent Science concepts that are being taught in the classroom.

At the same time, students often appreciate the hands-on use of emerging technologies and a comfortable acquaintance with the kind of experimentation that leads to a completed project. Where makerspaces exist on campus, they provide a physical laboratory for inquiry-based learning.
