Classroom Makeover to Re-engage Active Learners

My students need flexible seating options such as bed trays, bean bag chairs, and bouncy bands to allow them the freedom to learn in a comfortable environment. Many of my students need movement throughout our long 80 minute blocks.

My Students

My students are active rock stars each and everyday in my classroom! They engage in a wide variety of learning activities each day, constantly showing perseverance and grit as we make our way through United States History!

Not only do these 8th graders have passion for arts but have a passion for learning and improving their skills in all of their academic classes.

We work extremely hard from 7:30-2:45 each day to make both academic gains as well as for them to perfect their art (some of them even voluntarily stay until 4:15 to continue doing so)!

My Project

This project will benefit my students by making them feel more comfortable in my classroom. Students already love the few yoga balls and standing desks that we have and constantly ask for more flexible seating options. Additionally throughout our long 80 minute block students often crave the ability to have some type of movement. By having a variety of options students can choose the type of seat that fits their learning needs best.

This project will also benefit some of my students who have become a bit disengaged in class.

In speaking with some of my most disengaged students many of the requested items like the bean bag chairs, standing desks and new headphones are items they say would help them to focus more in class and in turn give better effort.

Headphones will allow students to use our Chromebooks to work independently using video as a tool for instruction. The bean bag chairs and chairs on wheels give students different types of options for their flexible seating that are both comfortable and allow for movement. The chair bands allow students to use traditional seating but create a quite way for students to be able to exert their energy during class time. And lastly the marble fidgets would be another quite way for students to be able to direct any additional energy into allowing them to better focus on their learning!
