My classroom is a self-contained special education classroom that serves students with cognitive disabilities.
Their abilities are wide in variety and are the focus of our classroom!
My students need differentiated instruction in order to learn adaptive, behavioral, and academic skills. Their disabilities range from Down syndrome to autism, Intellectual disability, and others.
Despite what their diagnosis is, my students are capable of learning and growing! It is my job to identify their learning style, be creative, and make learning fun.
My Project
At the end of the year, materials always seem to be running low in classrooms! Fostering independence is a huge goal in our classroom. We use individualized visual schedules daily with students. These schedules require lamination and velcro so students can use them throughout the year. We use laminated paper with student names, address, phone numbers and other valuable information for students to learn. Students trace the information by using dry erase markers. We use task boxes daily in our classroom. This is a pencil box with matching, sorting, labeling tasks that students can do independently. Creating task boxes requires pencil boxes, lamination, velcro, and markers for labeling the boxes. We have multiple shelves in our classroom for storage. Little ones are always curious as to what is on the shelves so we use sheets to cover up the materials while students are not using them.
My students' learning is the top priority in our classroom.
If we have basic materials, then helping them succeed and learn can be the focus of my energy.
