Classroom Magazines Help Foster a Love of Reading!
Help me give my students classroom magazines that they can call their own! We use these magazines in so many ways, and afterwards they'll be able to take them home to share with their families!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from low income, hard-working families. Some have just arrived to the US from refugee camps from Syria, Somalia, and Thailand. In my 2nd grade class I have reading levels that span from letter/sound recognition for my English Learners and struggling readers to third grade level readers. However, no matter their skill level, they are ready to try and work hard each day!
They always make me smile, and I love watching them grow as learners!
We also spend a lot of time building a sense of community in our classroom. We learn that making mistakes is okay, but it's not okay to not try. This is a lesson that the students take to heart, and one that sticks with them all year, and hopefully throughout their lives!
My Project
Classroom magazines are a great literary tool that can be used in so many ways! We can create a shared reading lesson around current topics, and focus on reading skills (decoding, word patterns, comprehension strategies) all at the same time! We can use them during guided reading, or the students can partner read with one other.
Students love the magazines because they are able to take them home and share them with their families!
This is important because many of my students have very few books and kid friendly reading materials at home. Since we have discussed the magazines in class, even the students who aren't reading at grade level yet can talk about differnt aspects of the magazine with their families. I also put copies in our classroom library, and they are a very popular selection for students during Independent reading! You'd be amazed at how often students like to reread a text they are familiar with!
