I teach at a low socioeconomic school. Most of the students in my class are from low income homes with single families. Recently, we have received students from another school who received school choice vouchers, as well as students impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Most of my students come to me with very little school supplies. We aren't allowed to request many of the materials I use in my classroom because many cannot afford it. I am requesting that I receive materials that can help the students visualize as well as motivate to thier work. My students are motivated with hands-on experiences. Because I want my students to be successful and receive the same experiences of learning as others, I purchase them on my own. It gets very costly. I would love to have post it notes, posters, markers, paint, scissors, glue, crayons, tape, and so on. The comprehensive curriculum provides rich activities for students to participate in, and the learning becomes more meaningful. Therefore, we are desperate for supplies they can use in the classroom. It will enrich the lessons and activities. These materials will enrich a language arts group assignment. The students will read about a man named Jackie Robinson. They will create a news report about him and his achievements. They will paint a scene from the story. They will create a collage of pictures that explain his obstacles and achievements. The students will illustrate the characters and explain their characterization. They will post their illustrations on posters. My students love doing hands on activities, rather than traditional "read the story and answer the questions". Having these materials would be an excellent way to involve the students.
