My students need books that are predictable, of high interest, and that are on their reading level as well as individual book boxes to store their chosen books.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember how it felt when you first started reading on your own? Do you also remember how it felt to get stuck on a book that was too hard for you? My students are discovering the joy of reading independently and they need books that are interesting and on their level to help them along.
I am teaching a group of wonderful kindergarten scholars an urban school in Michigan.
My students are excited to learn so that they can one day go to college. Most of my students live in poverty and many struggle to succeed academically. Their school has undergone many changes over the summer but the school staff is very dedicated to the children, and willing to go above and beyond in order to help all students succeed.
My Project
I am requesting a set of predictable text books and multiple sets of leveled books to expand our classroom library. While we have a reasonable number of books in our classroom library, few of them are on the level of my emergent and early readers. These resources will provide them books that are on their reading level, that are predictable in text, and that are of high interest to the students. The book boxes will provide each child their own place to store the books that they want to read and be able to transport around the classroom.
Reading is critical to student success at all grade levels.
My scholars want to go to college, but they will never get their if they don't learn to read! Having high interest books that are at their reading level will make students more excited about reading, more confident in their own reading abilities, and able to engage in more authentic reading experiences.
