My Students

I teach History, English, and French to students in grades 6-8. Alpine is a small community and Mountainville Academy feels like a home away from home. Our school serves PreK to 9th grade students. Many students have been here since Kindergarten and we love to see their growth throughout the years.

My first year of teaching was last year (2020-2021).

It was a rough start! In order to make room for the PreK classrooms, our school library was downsized. While there are some books available for middle school students, most of the library caters to elementary readers. I inherited a classroom with a small shelf of books and I supplemented with books that I brought from home, but I’d like to offer more choices when it comes to reading.

My Project

I want my students to develop a deep love for reading. I have a student-choice classroom where students are given 10 minutes at the beginning of class to read a book of their choice. We read, talk, and write about the books we are reading.

Reading will help students overcome the learning loss they've experienced due to Covid.

It's the number one activity that drives student success. In addition, a love of reading will improve their lives outside of the classroom.

As they read, students learn to overcome challenges in their lives. They have less stress and develop more empathy for others. Nothing beats a good book!
