Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

As part of Teach For America, I teach a group of 23 inquisitive second graders in inner-city Houston. My students face many challengs in their lives and books are an enjoyable escape for them. My students are eager to learn, but they lack access to reading materials at home. Reading everyday is crucial to their development as readers and exposure to quality literature is important for fostering a love of reading. As a first year teacher, I lack a sufficiently large classroom library to allow my students to check out books to read at home. I am requesting more books for our classroom library to loan out in order that my students have access to quality literature at home. My book selection includes a range of books intended to expose my students to many different people, places, and experiences and appeal to a wide variety of interests. I believe that access to quality literature at home will be key to my students' academic success.
