I am teaching a first grade dual-language classroom in the South Seattle area. Dual-language means that we learn language (Spanish and English) through content area. So, we teach science and literacy and math in Spanish, and social studies and literacy and math in English. These programs are designed to have a diverse group of students, so both language learning groups have the benefit of having many other student experts in that language. For example, my class is a little more than 50% native Spanish speakers, and a little less than half native English speakers. My students have only had half a year of "normal" formal schooling due to COVID and now that we have had time to react and plan for online instruction, I want to help make this year as meaningful and memorable as possible for them.
My Project
As a first year teacher, I am not starting out with very many resources or materials for my students. Learning to read is one of the biggest goals in first grade, and I want to support my students' reading journeys with the most resources and books possible! When students are learning to read at home, there are many other things they would rather do besides read, like play with their brother/sister/cousin/friend/dog/cat, or spend time with their family. Since home is not a normal place or "formal learning" and full of distractions,
I want to provide students with books at their levels and with a wide range of topics to fit the interests and needs of all students.
When students have books that they are interested in, or that are important to them, they are much more likely to want to read!
