I teach a variety of 4th grade students! I spend my morning teaching English Language Arts. In the afternoon, I teach Science, Social Studies, and Health to a mixed ability group of students. My school is located in Charles Town, West Virginia. My goal, as their teacher, is to provide them with positive learning experiences in school.
My students are usually eager to learn; however, they tell me that the number one reason they do not read is because they cannot find books that they like.
It is my goal to flip that light switch and get my students eyes to shine at the thought of reading a book!
My Project
I am a new teacher trying to build my classroom library, as well as, build reading engagement. Graphic novels, picture books, and magazines are terrific for reluctant readers. For example, many struggling readers will often pick up a comic book because the pictures and visuals are less intimidating than a typical book. As long as they are reading, I am a happy teacher!
Freedom of choice is a key to getting students motivated and excited about reading.
I have compiled a list of books created by former 4th grade students for my upcoming 2018-2019 students. I want my students to become better at reading through books they enjoy and can relate to. These different types of texts will serve as choice sets within our reading block, as well as, mentor texts within our reading units.
Thank you so much for helping to support and create a classroom library in which students feel inspired through the process of reading. All of the reading materials donated will be able to serve 65 students total this year and continue to be used in years to come!
