When I think of any classroom, I first think of a classroom library. They are important to any grade level because they allow students to have choice in what they read. Libraries capture students?interest and pull them into developing their literacy. For my classroom library, I would like my students to have books that are colorful and interesting to them. I need bookshelves, books, bean bags and would like to put lamps in the area if possible. I want this to be a place where students feel welcome and comfortable. These resources will be for my Kindergarten classroom at Pershing Magnet School, a Chicago Public School. It is my first year teaching, so I need many resources. As a part of my professional development, I have become part of the New Teachers Network at the Center for Urban School Improvement and the University of Chicago. We have not received our budget for the year, but I need much more than I will be allotted. All twenty-nine of my students will benefit from our classroom library. As a part of my curriculum, I will have a time each day when students have Self-Selected Reading. This is a time where students choose a book they want to read. In kindergarten it is often a time that students become interested in books, the pictures and learn to make sense of why there is text on a page. Much of their time with these books will be picture walking. Students learn to comprehend what is happening in a picture and tell others. They will be able to do this individually and with small groups. Also, anytime they are done with a classroom activity this is a place they will be able to go to continue learning independently. Students love knowing they can choose a book all on their own! I want my students to have a classroom library because this is the time of their development that they will learn to love reading. They will each find a favorite book, one they like to read on their own and one they love to have read to them. They will find a fascination with different books and be well on their way to becoming readers!
