Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Last year, my second year as a teacher, I had the unfortunate experience of requiring back surgery in October. During my two month medical leave, my classroom library virtually disappeared. When I returned, only about 40 of my 200 books remained! Since that time, I have written grants and scoured garage and warehouse sales trying to restock my bookshelves. I spend hours every weekend at the public library checking out books for my students. However, my resources can only go so far and our library is still a bit dismal. My students work diligently every day to become better readers and writers but they need to be immersed in text to meet the goals set for them this year. I currently have twenty students at various reading levels. I want my students to succeed and to do so we need assistance in replenishing the books in our classroom library.
