My Students

A classroom library is one way to show kids that I, as a teacher, care about them. I love my kids, but I don't have enough books for them to read.

My students are living mainly in poverty on the Navajo reservation.

Even the wealthiest among them rarely get to go other places, their parents are usually working. Most of my kids have television and that can expose them to other worlds but with a book, they can get lost in their imaginations and feel at least for a while like things might be okay.

My Project

If you've ever been lost in a book, you know how a book can change a life. Books are more than mere entertainment during a flight. They're a gateway into a world where good guys win and bad guys lose (in most cases) but also a world with a huge stack of trials that the good guys have to overcome in order to win. My kids want and need to learn about greatness because there is little of it around them.

My project is not just important, it is vital.

The only kids will get better at reading is to practice, but no one wants to read something boring; something they cannot possibly relate to. So, I wanted a classroom library to help my kids read something they would enjoy reading.
