I am a Head Start preschool teacher from Cincinnati, Ohio. I have 17 little pieces of the puzzle that make up my classroom. And though they are all unique and different individuals, they share one thing in common: poverty. My students receive less opportunities, less support, and less resources than a typical child, all due to their socioeconomic status. I want to give them more. Our society has come to an agreement that we have major issues to fix in our country, but is having a hard time deciding on how to do so. I think the best, and most critical place to start, is with our children. I want to do everything I can to ensure that my students have their best chance.
My Project
As a first year teacher, my classroom library is not as big as I would like it to be for my students. I would love to offer them a wide variety of books to explore.
All 17 of my students come from low-income families, with limited access to books.
I currently send books home with students to share with their families, and so that they can complete their nightly reading homework.
Although they don't have easy access to books, they all share a deep love for reading. Story time and silent reading time are cherished times in our classroom. At this point in the year, we have gone through all of our books! They devour new ones as soon as I put them out! This donation will be greatly loved and appreciated. Thank you!
