Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Honors 10th grade English students have a deep passion for learning. They are extremely thoughtful and caring for one another. Even though they have their plate full with AP and Honors classes, they never make excuses.

My ELL students come from different places all over the world.

They each bring unique aspects to our classroom and learn from each other's culture. They help each other in learning each other's native language. Learning English is their focus and they practice every day to get better. Since the majority of their content is in English, they are not reading much in either language.

My Project

Teenagers would rather watch Netflix, play video games, or text their friends than pick up a book. Often I hear parents tell me that their child "used to read" when they were younger. My goal this year is to make students rediscover their passion for reading. I want to build a young adult library for my students, as well as provide my English Language Learners a variety of young adult books in their native language, and audiobooks in English. My hope for my ELL students is to build their love for reading in their native language and then provide the English equivalent to build their English vocabulary. Often times, starting with the English novel will deter them since it can be too difficult.

Overall, reading provides many skills for students.

By providing popular and relatable books, students will help cultivate my goal of loving to read. I started building my library but it is very small and costly. Having books in my classroom will provide easy access and build community.
