This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach four co-taught seventh-grade English classes each day. The smallest is 18, the largest is 31. Most of the students have various academic and behavioral challenges that can be difficult to serve in a standard classroom setting.
Even with my largest class, I love their sense of humor, their energy, and the way they engage with me.
I have always loved teaching middle school because you can see them embarking on developing their individual selves, and it's inspiring to be even a small part of that.
My Project
Literature circles are daunting for teachers in middle school, and I want my learners to find the magic of reading that I had growing up; the best way I can think to do this is by presenting them with characters they can easily connect and relate to.
Graphic novels have such a wider reach for younger readers because they are dynamic and visually stimulating, and I want to bring the enjoyment that I have had with them to my students today.
In a world of small screens and limited free time and access to worlds beyond their front doors, my students deserve to have their horizons expanded, to see worlds where they can see themselves.
