My exceptional students are reluctant to read and their reading “End of Grade” (EOG) scores are Level I and Level II. I am responsible for providing instruction in reading and remediation to prepare them for state EOG tests. I work with students in grades five through eight in a middle school setting. In order to bring up their reading skill level and improve their EOG scores, I need some high-interest low vocabulary reading materials for my students to use, which will motivate their interest in reading. These students will have an opportunity to use these books in the classroom on a daily basis. Our school participates in a district program called "Edgecombe Reads". Our library collection for the school does not have enough of the books that would motivate the reluctant reader. I feel that if my students have books that would appeal to their interest and written at a level they can read, their reading skills would improve. My students need to interact with various genres and need materials that will appeal to them. Each school year approximately twenty students will be exposed to these materials. Adding these great collections to my classroom will enable a number of reluctant students to become more proficient readers.
