Classroom Library Flooded...My Kids Need Books!

My students need books for independent reading. Most of our books were ruined from broken pipes and flooding!

My Students

I teach 5th graders that are excited and motivated to learn. Many of my students are already performing above grade level and need to be appropriately challenged, while others need more intensive interventions.

My students look forward to school each day, excited about the day's learning.

They are respectful and kind and are working on becoming great current and future leaders in society. They love reading, books, hands-on activities, projects, and STEM activities. Since we are not a Title I school, we receive no extra funding. Therefore, my students lack some of the resources that are abundant at other schools.

My Project

Unfortunately we had some pipes burst in my classroom a couple of weeks ago. My entire classroom library was soaked and my floor was flooded with 1-2" of water. Most of the books were not salvageable. I lost 750 books. My heart broke that day, as I've spent 7 1/2 years purchasing and collecting books for my kiddos to read. My kids were just as heartbroken when they returned to school and saw the damage. I even had a few students make a memorial for all of the books lost. I want to brighten up my students' day by adding many new books to our library!

I teach reading to 90 students and strive to build a love of reading in all of my students.

Part of that includes time for independent, self-selected reading every day where I meet with students one on one. In order to do that, my students need books to read in our classroom library! I love to teach reading and part of my job includes motivating students to want to read. To do this, I often utilize books from our classroom library to give book talks, do "book tastings" where students rotate around to preview books, read aloud the beginning of a book and then stop (always hooks them), raffle off who gets to be the first to read a new book, and many other strategies. I am unable to do this without engaging books in our classroom library. Many of the books chosen were requested by students. In addition, many STEM books were selected because my students LOVE anything to do with STEM and I want to encourage their curiosity, learning, and creativity.
