I teach Spanish in a small rural school district in Wisconsin. My students are very hard working and are dedicated to increasing their level of language proficiency on a daily basis. My students are always asking if there is more that we can include in order to fine tune their Spanish skills and that is where this project comes in.
Our school is continually looking for ways to increase the overall literacy of our students and I am trying to do my part although it is in another language.
I have taught in other school districts where students choose to use their cell phones in class which causes distractions to their learning. However, in this school district, I see more students who want to continue reading as much as possible. I want to be able to take the love of reading that my students have and apply that to their love of learning languages.
My Project
Earlier this year I began an in-class library to allow my students the opportunity to have access to reading materials in Spanish. They have really enjoyed reading the books and it has really helped their overall writing in the target language.
I am now looking for books that are of a different variety such as graphic novels and other popular teen books.
I have found that students are attracted to books they have already read in English and that helps them feel successful in Spanish.
I wanted to start this project prior to the summer so that the books will hopefully be ready to go before the next school year.
