I teach fifth grade at a culturally diverse PK-8 school in the center of Portland, OR. Our school is built on a strong history of community. We are an international baccalaureate (IB) school with a Mandarin dual-language immersion program. We also have a unique partnership with local artists and Portland State University that houses a contemporary art museum within our school with an "unusual pairing between early education and internationally renowned artists and their work."
Fifth grade is such a pivotal year for students, and I am honored to be their teacher.
So far this year, we have established a solid, inclusive classroom community of learners. It is amazing to see my students' growth (as learners and people in general) as they navigate their last elementary school year.
My Project
Adding these books to our classroom library will make a lasting difference on my students' learning and also improve their school lives. Having thought-evoking text with grit will support their literacy skills and practices to support their education beyond this school year, but also into their personal lives.
This variety of books are all great entry points to meet students where they are at to best support their literacy.
There are social justice-centered books, topics that cover historic fiction, poetry, and more. There is a great variety of titles, content, and levels in this selection, which reflects my student demographic.
