We need more choices of books in our classroom library!
My students are high schoolers who come from a caring community. Our school district, like many, has suffered from budget cuts and lack of school funding. Despite this, my students work hard to overcome their learning differences and social deficits. My students, many of whom have Individual Education Plans, benefit from opportunities to engage in learning in caring, comfortable, supportive environment. Students crave learning spaces and experiences that are aligned to their individual needs. We would love to continue to transform our classroom into a welcoming, flexible learning space!
Through this project, my students have learned many skills essential for success in college and careers. My students have learned research skills, debate and compromise. This project has extended my students' academic skills and applied them to a real-world experience: advocating for themselves and managing their personal needs/wants while deciding what is best for our classroom and the learners in it.
With this project we are trying to build a better classroom library. As more books are going digital, my classmates need hands-on time with books (and less "screen time). I would like our classroom library to offer us the opportunity to sit quietly reading a book without the distraction of technology.
In this project we each had a chance to take a leadership role. We each took responsibility to guide our class through the research, debate and completion of the project online. This allowed each of us to learn skills like time management, working with others, adhering to a timeline and other skills.
This is important to our us, our school and our community because we would like to have access to books we can read with our friends. This will allow us to help each other when we don't understand something in the book we have read and to talk about the books together.
