One of my favorite ways to do teach reading and writing is through an author study. This is when we study the works of one author. We read the story first for enjoyment. Afterward we study the book for learning. What types of things did the author do? Did he use repeating lines or words? Was it a rhyming book? What did the illustrator decide to create? What type of genre did the author write? How is this book different or similar to the other books?
It may not seem like first graders could delve deeply into a book or an author study, but they can! And they often carry it over into other areas of Language Arts. If an author uses certain words often, the students become familiar with those words and build their vocabulary. If an author uses certain patterns in writing then the students often decide to recreate that pattern in their own writing or even make up a new pattern. Getting children to think about an author's decision of characters and setting helps them think of just that in writing workshop. And most importantly, it gets them excited to make connections to literature and enjoy a good book.
I am anxious to build my classroom library. I am hoping to build several author study baskets. This proposal is specifically for filling out my Kevin Henkes collection. The following books are available through Barnes and Noble: Kitten's First Full Moon, Wemberly Worried, Jessica, Weekend With Wendall, and All Alone by Kevin Henkes,
