Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students come from a low-income neighborhood where nearly 100 percent of the students receive free breakfast and free lunch. Many students speak a language other than English at home and have not been given the same opportunities and resources as other students their age.
Even though students at my school have many factors working against them, they are enthusiastic learners that deserve to be provided with resources to help them succeed!
We are committed as a community to work together to provide the best learning environment for our students. Through high expectations, a strong family connection, and a foundation of love, we help our students achieve academic and emotional success.
Specifically, my class is full of hard working Special Education students, who would greatly benefit from some added resources. They are eager to learn and I an eager to provide them with resources that will help them achieve their goals.
My Project
As I begin my first year teaching middle school special education students, the list seems endless of resources and tools I want to give to them. My special needs students deserve a classroom that is not only filled with resources, but is also a space where they can feel comfortable, relaxed, and calm.
I want to create a dual relaxation corner and classroom library where my students can go when they need time to calm down, a break from work, or to just relax and dive into an awesome book.
The space will be equipped with sensory tools, fidgets, a comfortable rug, soft floor pillow, and a variety of multicultural books to help them regulate emotion and feel at home in the classroom. The space can also be used as a flexible seating option, which will help my students have more seating choices when it comes time to do work. All of these things will help my Special Education students thrive, both academically and emotionally!
