I teach a diverse group of high school students. Many of them are already avid readers while some of them are still discovering books they love. Nothing brings me greater joy than to help them make those discoveries.
While most of the books toward which my students naturally gravitate would be considered Young Adult Fiction, many of them are also falling in love with the classics.
Teaching students at such a variety of academic levels means one of my main jobs is helping them improve their reading comprehension, and they consistently amaze me with their growth. An increasing number of them are becoming more intrinsically motivated, and their assessment scores are improving as well.
My Project
I teach all kinds of readers, and I've interacted with them enough to know what they like. Most of them are either huge fans of Young Adult Fiction already or become fans when they start reading this kind of material. Books like the Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, and Divergent are always hits.
One of my two most important jobs as an English teacher is helping kids become better readers.
The other one, of course, is helping them become better writers. I firmly believe that the best writers ARE avid readers, and I'm also convinced that the best way to get better at something is to do it--a lot. By providing my students with books that they will love to read, I'll be giving them something to do besides playing on their phones when they finish their other assignments.
