My students need a classroom iPad with communication software which will be purchased with the gift card to use throughout their day to communicate their wants and needs.
Imagine living in a world where no one can understand what your wants or needs are. Unfortunately many special needs children are living in that world. Being that communication is difficult for them people often try to guess what the child's want or need is. Are they guessing correctly?
My classroom consists of 12 special needs students ranging in age from 6 to 11.
Our classroom is in a school designed to meet the needs of multiply disabled students ranging in age from 5 to 21. Most of these students are unable to communicate with their voice so expressing their wants and needs can become very frustrating at times. Some of my students are able to walk independently, while others are beginning to walk with walkers and still others spend most of their day in wheelchairs or adaptive equipment. My students are a fun, loving group who are just so happy to be in school and have an opportunity to learn to communicate and interact with their peers.
My Project
If my class was to have a classroom iPad with Proloquo2Go installed on it, I would be able to incorporate the communication program into their school day. They would be able to answer a simple question just by touching a picture. Proloquo2Go allows you to set up boards for the classroom to assist them in communicating all of their needs. If a student is crying and we do not know why he/she could be shown a board with body part pictures and they could touch the picture to indicate what is hurting them. A page could be set up to indicate whether they are hungry or thirsty. The possibilities are endless. Finally my students will be able to communicate their wants and needs to me and my classroom staff.
By using this iPad with Proloquo2Go the guess work that has gone into meeting my students' wants and needs will be eliminated.
My students will finally have the voice they need to communicate.
