Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a Special Day Classroom where 9th-12th grade students with special needs are learning academics, as well as Social and Life Skills. We are in a rural, diverse community where many are coming from a low-income situation.
As a secondary teacher with special learners, it is my responsibility to foster independence and provide meaningful opportunities for students to practice important daily skills.
My students look forward to learning these skills in fun and creative ways, and are happy to share their learning with their families and teachers.
My Project
Last year, I was lucky enough to win a grant to build a classroom grocery store. We were able to purchase shelves, as well as some play food , registers and money. With this store, students are able to practice critical life skills to help them become independent adults. Students can learn how to do many tasks including but not limited to: shopping on a budget, meal planning and shopping for appropriate supplies, counting money, dollar up shopping, and social skills. Unfortunately, some of our fake money has torn, and some of our play food needs to be replaced. Furthermore, by adding new supplies like real shopping baskets, it would help create a more life-like scenario.
With this classroom store, students also get cashiering practice which can help them when looking for future employment.
They are given an opportunity to practice essential people skills like speaking to customers, and eye contact, as well as math skills as they are adding up items for a total price. Having an apron can add to the experience as they may feel like it is part of a real uniform.
