"Oh you work in South Dallas, that must be rough" are the words I constantly hear after sharing the area I work in. The perception of Pleasant Grove in South Dallas is not due to the children that live there but due to the environment in which they have to learn how to survive. The divide between North and South Dallas is very salient, where North Dallas holds affluent people and resources while South Dallas residents are struggling to make it. South Dallas residents are constantly seen as inadequate, but many do not realize these South Dallas residents often make amazing lemonade when they are given a bunch sour lemons.
These young male leaders have aspirations to break the cycle and become 1st generation college graduates despite the obstacles they are forced to deal with.
My students are expected to compete with their "peers" of North Dallas in school and on state exams when they are given half the resources. My job is to provide as much support as possible so they start at the same level as their North side peers.
This project consist of materials my students use every day in the classroom and will make sure every student is prepared. Also having different seating options in the classroom creates choice and increases focus.
Your donation will help all my students start the school year off with the proper supplies and cut down on students' cost to start school.
At the beginning of the school year students are given supply list from 6-8 different teachers and are expected to have the supplies during the first week of school. Due to this it can be very costly getting supplies for multiple teachers and many of my students have gone weeks without having all of their supplies which disrupts their learning. I am hoping to supply the basic materials that are needed in my classroom: notebooks, pencils, glue sticks, and pencil cases. These materials will be used every day to create and build interactive notebooks to take notes and stay organized throughout the year. This will help every student start off prepared from day 1 of school.
I also have a goal of a more welcoming and choice friendly learning environment. I have noticed not all students learn best sitting at a desk all day and when I give them the option of "sit how you learn best" students pick options of standing, sitting on the floor, sitting in a chair with no desk attached. The standing desk, bean bag chair, and tilt and lean chairs are to have flexible seating to help students feel more comfortable with choices and to increase engagement in the classroom.
Every student should feel confident going into a new school year instead of being concerned about not being prepared or being restricted.
