As soon as I heard about flexible seating, I knew I wanted to give it a try!
As a first-year teacher, I had nothing but traditional desks and chairs and bare walls. My goal was to great a welcoming environment for my 9th and 11th grade English 1 and 3 students. During winter break, I found some hand-me-down items and redesigned my classroom. When my kids returned from break, they were amazed. My students were actually proud of their classroom. Students who are not even in my class, now spend lunches in my classroom. It's so amazing to hear high school students excited to come to class. This has been a game changer in my classroom and it has increased my confidence as a teacher.
My Project
Students work best when they are comfortable, even I do my best work when I'm comfortable. The items I am requesting for my classroom will provide students with seating options. The bean bag chairs can be moved throughout the room to be used for group discussions. The stools/tables will allow students to work in any of the flexible seating whether it be couches, chairs or tables.
My Project
Flexible seating is a non-verbal way of saying welcome to OUR classroom. I need a classroom space that will accommodate movement, choice, group discussion, and self-directed learning.
The supplies I have requested will create and a diverse but cohesive classroom for high school students.
The rugs will create stations throughout the classroom for various activities and allow them to get up and move around which in turn will help with behavioral issues. The beanbag chairs are easily moved from one location to another and from one activity center to another. The lap desks will allow them to use the flexible seating and still be actively engaged in the class work and discussion.
