Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Writers, explorers, scientists, artists — my third grade friends here in the heart of Washington DC are all these and more throughout the day. We do a lot of collaborative projects and move around the classroom, and we don’t have enough clipboards for all of us to do our work while we’re up and about!

My students see the world as their classroom.

(At recess today I got a LOT of shouts of “Look! There’s a cumulus cloud!”) I don’t want them to feel like we’re stuck at our desks or that learning only happens at a desk.

My Project

Our third graders learn everywhere they go! We have already gone outside this year to practice our science observation skills, using folders to write on and hoping our papers didn't blow away in the wind. In ELA we often work in small collaborative groups and spread out around the room to minimize noise, and we bring our papers with us.

We are a classroom on the move!

We are trying to be responsible with our things, and clipboards will help us manage our materials while we bring our work around the room. If you've ever known an 8 year old, you know how important movement is. We've done some of our best work outside and on the carpet, and these clipboards are a small way to improve that learning.
