My school is located in Greenville, SC in a low income community. Despite the statistics, I believe that ALL scholars that step foot into any of our classrooms can graduate from college. Our scholars are very eager to learn, but we often do not have the same educational resources available to publicly funded schools (such as technology at home, or even at school). Our scholars have great learning potential, and they deserve to be granted access to just as much as the scholars in the neighboring, high socioeconomic district.
The materials needed are essential components in Math to remediate or enrich student learning.
My Project
Receiving these supplies will increase the academic engagement of my scholars during Eureka math lessons. My fifth graders are learning several challenging math concepts this year, and I'd like to give them the ability to use varied mediums to solve multi-step problems.
My hope is for all of my scholars to become confident in their abilities to demonstrate even the trickiest of word problems.
We will use personal marker boards and dry erase markers to practice concepts such as long division, place value, and operations with fractions. As a math teacher, seeing my scholars' thought processes from the beginning to the final answer allows me to quickly and efficiently evaluate their strengths and weaknesses so I may tailor my teaching to best fit their individualized needs. As I introduce brand new concepts such as coordinate planes, plenty of graph paper will also become essential to the success of my fifth grade learners.
