While I am home for the summer, I cannot stop thinking and mentally organizing my Kindergarten classroom. I have been thinking about my routines and procedures, as well as what went well last year, what I’d like to improve for my students and myself, and what materials I feel would be most beneficial to enhance the learning experiences of each of my students. Since I began teaching, my expertise has been deeply rooted in literacy. As I continue to help my students become critical readers, writers and thinkers, my goal is to integrate literacy with other content areas, hopefully bringing different literacies to light for my students. I see the need to do this, as it is important for children to see that there is no one subject that is more or less important than the next; they are each significant key areas that should be explored and enjoyed. I plan to do this by enhancing my centers, or work stations this upcoming school year. It is my duty to create an environment that is rich in hands on learning, and I feel that in order to create this environment from the very beginning of the year, my students would most benefit from various manipulatives that would support literacy and math learning, and would also combine these content areas with art and motor skill practice. My project needs upper and lowercase magnetic letters, as well as tactile letters so that my students can improve their recognition of both upper and lowercase letters. It is important for my students to see and feel the letters, so that they can better identify them. My project needs math counters so that my students can better practice counting, sorting and pattern concepts. My project needs stamp pads, dot markers and play dough so that my students can continue to learn literacy and math concepts while at the same time interacting with materials that encourage play, which is still very important in Kindergarten. It would be very helpful for students if they could use play dough to create letters, shapes and numbers. It would also be more encouraging if they can use stampers and dot markers to practice making and matching corresponding letters and numbers. Thank you in advance for considering our proposal. Your donation will enable my students to engage in the integrated tasks of literacy, math, art, and play. My goal is to create a classroom where students can feel comfortable and confident as learners. I plan to create such an environment by supporting students with as many differentiated workstations and materials as I possibly can.
