My creative, bright, and deserving 11th grade students have recently immigrated to the U.S. to pursue safer, more prosperous futures. 22% of students at OIHS are refugees who have escaped some of the world’s most violent and protracted conflicts. My students come from diverse countries including Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Yemen, Eritrea, Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan, and are learning English. For some students, access to education in their home countries was limited or denied. Our school is a full-service community school, which means we focus heavily on social and emotional wellness, providing and connecting families to essential resources.
I strive to create the best possible learning environment for my amazing students-- a welcoming space full of opportunities, supplies, and comfort.
After moving to OIHS and resettling in a new classroom, I'm trying to rebuild my classroom. I need your help to purchase some items to create a beautiful, organized learning environment.
The items I have requested will make my classroom more inviting, warm, organized, and comfortable. One example of an item that will make a big difference are a class set of lightweight stools. Our classroom chairs are sturdy and very heave. In contrast the stools can be easily moved so kids can work in small groups and volunteers can carry move around and help students one-on-one. The chairs will also be critical for conducting community circles. Countless studies show the benefit of restorative circles to build community and increase learning. Because we don't have easy to move chairs, we can't do many circles.
Circles are the foundation to a healthy classroom.
In circles we grow community, practice hard reduction, and build trust. The stools will make circles easy to set up and even move outside so students get to breathe fresh air and enjoy sunshine.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
