Classroom Emergency Evacuation Backpacks for Students with Autism
Help me give my students their best chance in the event of an emergency evacuation at school. These backpacks, first aid kits, and emergency blankets will make evacuation packs should our students need to evacuate the building.
Our school for students with Autism serves as a center-based program for the majority of our county. Working with more than 15 districts we provide educational opportunities for about 130 students. Our school provides a K-12 program with a sister school offering supports up to age 26. Due to our students' special needs, a lot of traditional school activities take on a different look, even something as simple as a fire drill can cause confusion and disruption for our students. The loud noise and the interruption of their daily schedule can be very disruptive to their whole day. Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders rely heavily on visual aids and social stories to ease these difficult interruptions.
My Project
The items in this project will be used to create an emergency evacuation backpack for each classroom at our school for students with Autism.
Each one of these emergency backpacks will contain a first aid kit, emergency blankets, some preferred activities that help reduce anxiety for our students, and social stories that explain why we've had to leave the school or enter into a lockdown.
Emergency contact information, health/allergy information, and other classroom specific items will be added accordingly.
Our students rely on our staff for protection and guidance beyond the traditional level of need, and these packs will ensure their safety. These backpacks will give our students the structure and support they need during emergency evacuations, lockdown situations, and other emergent situations as they arise throughout the year and years to come.
