Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have two classes full of creative, energetic and curious fourth graders. My students impress me everyday with their enthusiasm for learning. My kiddos challenge me to think outside the box as a teacher and individual, and we've created a community of mutual collaboration and encouragement.
My students inspire me to take risks and try new things in the classroom because they just roll with it.
When we try something new, they give me suggestions to make it better and often, have great solutions to obstacles I didn't anticipate. When I am excited about a new idea and share it with them, they are too, and show me grace when it doesn't work out, and flexibility as we adjust to make it work. These are two qualities that are hard for adults to exhibit.
For many of my students, school is their only safe space. I strive to be the teacher they deserve everyday in the classroom and advocate for the resources they need.
My Project
These materials would provide the resources needed to implement our classroom economy. This will be my third year implementing a classroom economy and it has been wildly successful for classroom managements and our financial literacy unit in the past!
Students will be paid 'bonuses' to reward good behavior and work habits.
They will be responsible for tracking their bonuses in their balance books each day and calculating their balance each week. On Fridays, we open the 'bank' and students will receive their cash for that week's bonuses. This is great practice for students to count money, learn the function of a bank and keep track of their money.
Every six weeks, we set up our class 'store' and students take turns managing the store and shopping with their money. During this time, students learn the skill of bargaining, selling goods to make a profit and the concept of supply and demand. At the end of each semester, we then have an auction for big ticket items sponsored by local businesses.
