My students are always buzzing with energy. They love to move, chat, participate in hands-on projects, and grow their brains. When they walk into the room, it immediately comes alive with their fun personalities. You would never guess the number of challenges many of them face each day.
As a teacher at a school which services many low to moderate socioeconomic families, it is common for students to come hungry, tired, worried, and without all the supplies they need.
Nonetheless, this never seems to affect their desire to learn and their excitement for school.
I strive to give my students an environment which they are free to explore their wonders, show their creativity, and above all, feel safe. I hope they see school as a place where they can challenge themselves, discover their passion, and feel loved.
After teaching in the classroom for 5 years now, I am starting to realize just how motivated students are for prizes! This year I am going to implement a classroom economy for the first time.
I have already researched various effective methods and after seeing my classlist for the upcoming school year I am confident that one fits their personalities and learning styles the best.
Each day students will start at "Meeting Expectations Level--$10" on a clip classroom chart. Based on their behavior they can move up or down throughout the day. At the end of the day wherever they land they receive that amount of money. After collecting for 2 weeks they will be able to cash in their money for prizes using their math skills as well.
I will use the supplies organizational chart to have students keep their money in, the stickers as incentives and the jars as a way to organize all of the incentives after they are purchased.
