Celebrating Black History Month

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I work in an urban school district in Philadelphia. I teach Special Education English to 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. My kids are accustomed to trauma and because of that, certain behaviors tend to trickle into my classroom. The norms tend to be cutting class, coming to class late, wearing headphones, and using phones in class.

But instead of issuing punitive measures to discipline them, I want to celebrate our students.

This will be done with having an inviting classroom for them to learn in. This includes colors and decorations and games as incentives. This means having supplies and hygiene products on hand. It helps create a warm and nurturing classroom, instead of blank walls, which creates a welcoming room suitable for learning.

My Project

No student wants to walk in a room that has bare walls and no color. My project request is for things to help brighten up the room, like colorful borders and letters and paper to hide boring chalkboards. It also includes cutouts to help celebrate the holidays so students feel when they walk into class, it's more than just a classroom. But it's a place that fosters learning. It's a place that's nurturing because it's welcoming and full of color and life. It's a room that they want to walk into which in turn will create a room where they want to learn.
