I teach sixth-graders with a variety of intellectual impairments in Foley, Alabama but that's not what is "special" about them. These kids are so incredible and work so hard, that's what makes them so special. They work so hard for me and I love that they want to be successful. My students are focused on bridging the gap between their academic ability and their current grade-level. I love that my students know themselves well enough to know that they should sit in a specific place that is academically beneficial to them. I work with my students both in the general education classroom in whole-group, but I also have my own classroom that I am able to work in small-group and one-on-one with them based on their academic needs.
My Project
We're FINALLY getting a brand new school and I really want to create a classroom that feels welcoming with a sense of home. I've not had a classroom to make my own for my students in two years and I really want to create a warm, homey environment for them to feel like they can come in for anything at anytime. Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently, my students only have the option to sit at a table with two or four chairs. I want to create a room that gives them multiple options of places to sit where they can still work well.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them an environment that is welcoming, warm, with a sense of home and with additional seating options to make more effective learning choices.
