My students need animal and plant cells kits and forensic science kits that will allow them to see the differences and similarities between animal and plant cells.
Do you remember how much you learned in middle school science when you were involved in hands on learning investigations? I want to give my students the opportunity to succeed in science through hands on learning experiences.
I have an amazing group of seventh graders.
They are excited and curious about science. Most of my students come from families struggling with poverty. Many do not have the resources to provide basic school supplies, let alone science lab materials. I teach at a Title I school in a small rural community. I want my students to be able to participate in meaningful, hands on science lessons so that I can foster their love of learning and help them succeed.
My Project
I will use these resources to give my students a hands on approach to learning about plant and animal cells. My students will be able to discern the differences between plant and animal cells by examining them with microscopes. They will prepare slides with their own cheek cells and onion root epidermis. This will give them an up-close and personal look at the differences and similarities between the cells. They will then act as forensic scientists and use their knowledge of plant and animal cells to help solve a mock murder case. They will compare known types of plant and animal tissue to the evidence tissue. This crime scene investigation will further develop my students' understanding of the characteristics of plant and animal cells.
I believe that this project will create a meaningful and enriching learning experience for my students.
It will get them excited about science and will give them a hands on opportunity to learn about plant and animal cells.
