The great thing about a "cozy reading nook" is that you do not actually need to add them to your classroom. The kids will find and create them all by themselves. Research has shown that allowing students make choices about their reading time increases the likelihood that they would engage more in it.
I am privileged to work with students who bring to me varied background experiences.
My students come to me with a wide range of reading abilities, but each year I have a large percentage of students who are struggling with reading. Often times I feel that my students are willing and motivated to read but lack the experiences that some other students may have had as a result of growing up in a more literacy enriched household. I find that my students will get easily excited about learning and I am always so proud to watch them grow throughout the years. Our school district qualifies for Title 1 funds and many of my students face many challenges throughout the school year. I feel like school is a place they truly enjoy coming to each day. I work hard on creating an environment for my students that promotes literacy and a life long love of reading. My hope is that my students leave first grade as readers that find ways to bring reading into their own lives.
My Project
The resources that I am asking for will help me in creating a literacy rich environment where my students can begin to look at reading in a different perspective. I want to show students how they can continue to practice being a life long reader and I am providing them areas in our room that they can begin to use these reading strategies to help them as they grow as a reader. Sometimes encouraging children to spend more time reading can be as simple as creating a special spot for them to enjoy doing it which is my goal. I feel that these pillows and back rests will help in creating that excitement for reading.
Some kids have a disability that makes reading difficult to learn.
Others come to school without the literacy experiences they need to become readers. Some children struggle because they have received poor or inadequate reading instruction. When these and other risk factors are identified early, though, many children's reading difficulties can be prevented. I want to do my part in creating a literacy rich environment that can support my students and nurture a love of reading early on.
