The majority of my students do not have access to computers at home. The only place they can develop skills using technology is at school.
Our school is a Title I school, with mostly English language learners from low income homes.
They are hard-working, respectful, self-motivated young people who are eager to learn! The students, teachers, parents, administrators, and community members work together to create the best learning environment possible. For many students at our school, school is the safest place in their lives, and we work hard to give them the best possible experience when they are here. This means that not only are we teaching our subjects, but we are often teaching students about life choices, life skills, communication techniques, problem-solving strategies, and even diet and hygiene.
The laptop will benefit my students in many ways. It will be shared and used at students' tables when working on research, presentations, and other collaborative efforts--as well as projects outside the classroom. It will play an important part of improving students' knowledge and technology skills. It also will help students prepare for state standardized tests which are all done online. Daily use of the laptop will definitely increase familiarity and knowledge of how to use and navigate the different programs.
Not only will this laptop have an immediate impact on student learning, but it will help prepare them to succeed in middle school and high school so they will have the opportunity to attend college.
In order to be prepared and compete with their peers, the use of technology is crucial to their learning. Most of our students don't have computers at home, so I want to provide them with whatever opportunities I can to support them at school and in their future learning.
