I teach a group of highly motivated and diverse learners at a Title I school. My class is an enrichment classroom with accelerated learning opportunities for my 18 high-performing scholars. These students are talented readers and enjoy challenging and above grade-level work. This year, these students will be learning grade standards but will have many opportunities to interact with text and tasks that extend beyond grade-level requirements.
When I raise the bar, my students always rise to the occasion.
My Project
The objective for this project is to acquire a reliable laptop for our classroom. I have anywhere from 18-24 students in my room at any given time, but my classroom is only equipped with 3 student computers provided by the school. Due to the abundant generosity of previous DonorsChoose campaigns, I have been able to acquire two additional laptops, but 5 computers is still quite a ways from my goal of providing fair and equal access to all learners.
With this new computer, students can practice coding, writing, reading, and math, and research any topic that sparks their interest.
My school community is incredibly diverse. Some students have very enriched home lives with access to technology, while others do not have any access at home. The classroom is the best place for me to try and level the playing field, and provide all of my learners with the opportunity to learn 21st century skills.
Additionally, 2/3 of my students are girls, and it is very important for me to fuel their curiosity to help increase female participation in STEM initiatives.
